🇬🇧 The aesthetics of the jump

Have you ever seen roe deer at full gallop?

One perceives a sequence of moving images which, taken together, form a film sequence showing the perfect coordination of all the limbs to achieve maximum speed, which is played back before one’s own eyes.

But what if you were to extract individual frames from this film sequence? As a sort of ‘still image’ - just a tiny snapshot within the movement, such as a jump frozen by the camera.

There are some surprises in store! Some of the snapshots are simply perfect, aesthetically pleasing and immediately score top marks for poise. Others seem rather clumsy and comical, looking as though the animal is about to crash-land at any moment. But let’s not forget: four-legged creatures have to coordinate twice as many limbs as we humans do. Try walking on four legs – the deer would laugh at you!
