🇬🇧 Winter magic on two legs

Winter is a harsh time for all those who must survive outdoors. While the photographer can sit down in his warm apartment with a hot cup of tea after his outing to review the day's photos, the struggle for survival continues outside. Snow and frozen ground make finding food almost impossible. Silently and mostly unnoticed by us humans, hunger and cold take their toll.

It's all the more commendable when people offer winter feeding. This helps the birds in the neighborhood get through the winter. But what about the birds in the forest? Well, you can't save the whole world – but you can try!

That's one of the reasons why I always carry bird food in my pocket during the winter. The other reason, of course, isn't entirely selfless: with the scattered food, I can, with a bit of luck, attract birds and photograph them. This works particularly well with robins, as they are less shy and are obviously more willing to take the risk of being eaten... er... photographed by me!

Joking aside. Every time a bird lands in front of me and tucks into the scattered food, I imagine I feel a sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the chance to perhaps make it through the day and the coming night. And the photographer? He’s grateful for the photos he takes home and hopes that he might have been able to help a little.
